Golden Shiner

Very popular baitfish used by all types of angler and for good reason. Golden shiners are a deep bodied minnow species with a distinctive golden olive-silver color. Their fins may appear from golden brown to orange-reddish in hue. Older fish have a more golden color while younger fish appear more silvery. This species has a distinctive scaleless strip on the underside between the pelvic fin and the anus. Also, the lateral line dips low on the sides of the fish, and there are no barbels on the mouth. The Golden shinerwill be the distinct winner when it comes to putting fish on the hook. For catching large “lunker” bass nothing works better than wild golden shiners. Crappie and catfish will also attack this bait quicker than most any other. Golden Shiners range in size from one to six inches and can be graded to customers’ request.

Black or Red Fathead Minnows

The fathead minnow is an ideal baitfish species for pond stocking, and due to its many positive attributes is the most recommended baitfish as a purely forage species. The fathead minnow has a thick body with a blunt head and small mouth. Fathead minnows are normally dark olive on the upper body, with a lighter silvery shade below, and have a black stripe along the middle of each side. The “rosy red” fathead minnow is orange shading to a lighter silvery orange on the lower body.

Stocking: Fathead minnows are very useful when stocked in catfish only ponds where the catfish are not being fed regularly. They are also ideally stocked into new ponds intended to be stocked with bass and bluegill.

Goldfish come in a variety of colors including red, orange/gold, white, black and yellow or ‘lemon’ goldfish.Goldfish are very hardy and withstand poor water conditions, including low dissolved oxygen.Goldfish are being used for catfish bait and a variety of sizes are available.
